The naginata typically featured a 30–60 cm (12–23 inch) long, curved blade attached to a long shaft. The blade was forged in the same way as a katana.

The popularity of the naginata and another polearm, the yari spear, greatly increased after the failed thirteenth-century Mongol invasion of Japan. Battles against other samurai were one thing, but when confronted by an enemy who cared little for the ritual of mounted duels or notions of honour in warfare, Japanese warriors were forced to rethink their approach. It was obvious that the least efficient way of bringing down an archer on horseback was by using another archer on horseback. Instead, it was simpler for several ashigaru armed with naginatas to attack a rider collectively. The naginata, with its 30–60 cm (12–23.6in) curved blade attached to a long shaft, was the perfect weapon for unhorsing a warrior.
